The Latest from Lutheran Identity
In a time of rampant deracination in both church and society, it is a blessing that the folks at Lutheran Identity continue to share our own Lutheran treasures with us from around the world. Of course, this modern hymn, written by Danish Lutheran pastor and poet Nicolai Gruntvig (1783-1872), is part of our Lutheran identity and of our synod’s treasury of hymnody (LSB 645, TLH 467). Pastor Grundvig was also the author of “God’s Word Is Our Great Heritage” (LSB 582, TLH 283). He was persecuted by liberals in his own church body because of his biblical orthodoxy. But after a seven year exile, he returned to altar, font, and pulpit, and was even consecrated a bishop in the Church of Denmark. Maybe a future LCMS hymnal will commemorate him on September 2, the date of his death.
Our Lutheran identity is filled with hymns and hymnists, with confessors and with confessions, with their stories, with their struggles, and with their timeless, faithful, hope-filled, Christ-centered, and beautiful works of art that abide with us to this day, and will remain with us, Deo volente, for generations yet to come!
Soli Deo gloria!
