"That's Too Catholic" - A Discussion (Part II) on the Didymus Podcast

The choir and high altar of the Lutheran parish church of Sts. John and Martin in Schwabach, northern Bavaria. The centerpiece of the 1508 high altar depicts the coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, flanked by Sts. John the Baptist and Martin of Tours, and the wings feature depictions of the Nativity, Resurrection, Pentecost, and the Death of the Virgin. The predella below features a depiction of the Last Supper, with paintings of Sts. John and Martin on the Gospel side, and on the Epistle side St. Anne holding the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Christ Child with Sts. Mary and Lazarus of Bethany. The festal portions of the altar are shown above, but the altar also has ferial and Passion configurations, some of which can be seen here.

Last week on The Didymus Podcast, I discussed with the Revs. Joseph and Jesse Schlie the common Lutheran cliché “That’s Too Catholic,” specifically the matters of chanting, the sign of the cross, and outward expressions or reverence, such as bowing and kneeling. Part Two dropped today, in which we discuss saints days, vestments, and crucifixes.
