Faith and a Zeal for Godliness

If you aren’t purchasing and reading Johann Gerhard’s Theological Commonplaces you really should be. The following is contained within forthcoming offering by Concordia Publishing House - Theological Commonplaces xxxi, The Last Judgment, section 50.

A reminder - Orthodox Lutherans are anti-antinomians and have been for a very long time.

Faith is not bare knowledge removed from a zeal for godliness and good works but is the confident apprehension of Christ’s merit which makes use of charity and good works of every kind. Therefore those who indulge in secular vices, who act like heathens, who only have God's name on their lips, cannot truly be reckoned in the number of the faithful. Rather, all true believers are also truly godly.
