The Praying Church

"What could the church do? What could it do in those last years of Jerusalem to solve the problem of Palestine, which the world's political leaders have been trying in vain for centuries to do? What could the church do to stop the ruin of the Roman Empire and of the inestimable treasures of ancient culture? Instead of holding world conferences and having endless debates about the boundaries between church and culture, it went on praying without ceasing and sang the Te Deum on the debris of a world that was coming to an end. None of its prayers were in vain."

                                                          - Hermann Sasse, Sanctorum Communio (1974)

The Rev. Kurt Reinhardt will address the topic: Is Christian prayer ever private? It's always personal but we never pray alone. A native of Ottawa and a graduate of Queen's University in Kingston and Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary in St. Catherines, Pastor Reinhardt has served since 1999 as Pastor of Trinity Evangelical Church in Kurtzville, near Listowel, Ontario. He is the author of My Light and My Salvation, a collection of poetry that aims to be both ecumenical and evangelistic in its scope.

The Rev. Stefan Gramenz and the Rev. Evan Scamman will report on The Lutheran Missal Project. This project has involved extensive research of both Latin missals and 16th Lutheran Church Orders. Pastor Gramenz graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Concordia University, Mequon, and from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne. Since 2018 he has been Pastor of the Lutheran Church of Christ the King in Pawling, New York. Pastor Scamman  Pastor Scamman graduated with an Associate in Arts degree from Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen, Washington, and from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne. Since 2018 he has been Pastor of First Lutheran Church in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The Rev. Roy Axel Coats will speak on Providence and Prayer in Martin Chemnitz.

Pastor Coats has served at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore since 2010. He graduated with a Bachelor's in Liberal Arts from Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California. He then attended Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana, completing his studies before being called to serve Redeemer Church. 2022 Novemberfest at St. John’s in Mattoon, Illinois

On Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, November 13th – 15th, St. John’s in Mattoon will again host this conference; last year was a great success, judging by the participation and responses we got.

David Ramirez, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Union Grove, Wisconsin. His topic will be “The Three Estates and Resistance to Tyranny.” As the modern totalitarian state is ever grasping for more power, he will address how we as the Church can learn from our failures and by going back to God’s Word and seeking to gain a proper understanding of the three estates.

We’ll also hear from Rev. Dr. Burnell Eckardt, our editor-in-chief, on his “Liturgical Observer,” and from departmental editor Rev. Dr. Karl Fabrizius on “Musing on the Mysteries.” We’ll have plenty of discussion and Gemütlichkeit, as usual.

Announcing!

Novemberfest and a Gottesdienst Conference

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mattoon, Illinois

Sunday evening and Monday, November 14-15, 2021

When we heard that the Fall CID Pastors’ Conference is not being held this year, we did some thinking.

Oktoberfest is not being held this year either, in Kewanee, Illinois.

St. Michael Conference in Detroit also not being held this year.

Some pastors have not been to conference in two years. Two years!

Something had to be done. And so we did it. Here’s something fabulous we have organized to provide you with the conference you wanted: Novemberfest and Gottesdienst Central.

Conference theme:          Reactions to Persecution

In an age of mounting animosity toward the Christian Church in our society, this conference aims to get pastors and laypeople thinking about how we might respond appropriately to such things.

For the seminar on Monday we are pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. Adam Koontz (pictured left), Assistant Professor at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana as our keynote speaker. Dr. Koontz was recently added to our ranks as a Gottedienst blogger. He’ll be speaking on “Reactions to Persecution in the Early Church.” We’ll also hear from Rev. Jason Braaten (pictured right), our editor known for producing The Gottesdienst Crowd, our weekly podcast. Pastor Braaten will speak on “Temptations amid Persecution: Distraction and Indifference." The day-long seminar on Monday will open with Divine Service at 9:00 a.m. at St. John’s.

And here’s an important BONUS: This Conference will be sandwiched between two evenings of Novemberfest: It all begins on Sunday evening, when Gottesdienst will be hosting a Picnic, Biergarten, and Gemütlichkeit under a heated tent at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tuscola, a half hour up the road from St. John’s, beginning at 5ish. And then on Monday after Vespers we’ll have a pizza party at St. John’s, followed by more of the Biergarten and Gemütlichkeit at Immanuel.

“The Life and Work of Hermann Sasse”

Student, pastor, scholar, teacher, and confessor, Hermann Sasse (1895-1976) is recognized as one of the leading voices of confessional Lutheranism in the 20th century…For him, to be a loyal Lutheran was to be a catholic Christian, heir to all the treasures of the church. His historical perspective blended with his confessional integrity won him the respect of Lutheran, Catholic, and Reformed alike. Hermann Sasse wrote in times of theological turmoil and political upheaval. In the midst of great adversity he brought a message that would strengthen and hold. Many and varied were the situations he addressed, and yet through them all it is the same message, the only message which finally holds, the message about Jesus Christ, our crucified and risen Lord. – Norman E. Nagel (1925-2019)

Speakers for the conference: The Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, President of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod; The Rev. Dr. John T. Pless, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Ministry and Missions Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
